Abstract

This paper deals with the use of Roe's upwind TVD difference scheme for solving unsteady 1-D flows with steep waves in plant channels. Such flows may be either free surface (subcritical/supercritical) or free surface/pressurized in a closed channel. The main features of the upwind scheme are described with reference to the unsteady 1-D open channel equations. Numerical results are obtained for a horizontal prismatic channel of rectangular cross-section by means of the computer code TRICS and are compared with either experimental data or analytic solutions. Comparisons are also made with other numerical schemes, the Lax-Wendroff scheme and the Preissmann scheme.
