Abstract

In this paper, a reduced order linear model is developed for the purpose of controller design (e.g. power system stabilizer (PSS) parameters tuning) in an unstable power system. This reduced order model is based on balanced truncation (BT) model reduction method. Generally, BT method cannot be applied directly to unstable systems. There are several techniques in the literature to extend the BT method to unstable systems. This paper utilizes three of model reduction techniques based on BT theory and evaluate their performance in power system applications. The proposed techniques is applied to 39-bus New England test system. The results of modal analysis and frequency response simulation indicate various aspects and features of these methods.
