Abstract
A means of achieving asymmetric magnification (Mx ≠ My) in collimated-output unstable resonators is proposed which obviates difficulties associated with nonspherical mirrors. By suitable choice of rather large tilt angles of spherical mirrors and mirror separation, simultaneous “confocality” can be achieved in x-z and y-z planes to the lowest order. Simple resonator design equations are given. Experiments have confirmed the design equations by interferometric examination of the minimized aberrations due to finite beam size. No detailed aberration analysis has yet been performed.
