Abstract

The stability of dissipative drift wave eigenmodes in a stationary state is investigated. Small magnetic shear, generated self-consistently by an electron plasma current through Ampère’s law, is included. This magnetic shear is found to be stabilizing (destabilizing) if the electron drift consistent with this is antiparallel (parallel) to the propagation direction of the drift waves. As a result, it is concluded that the introduction of magnetic shear does not effectively stabilize the drift wave instability.
