Abstract
The discrepancy between the number of vacancies determined at equilibrium and that determined for quenched samples, as well as anomalies in thermal properties and diffusion in high temperature metals, are discussed qualitatively in terms of a model based on short-living unstable pairs (i.e. a vacancy with an associated interstitial atom).
