Unlike the standard practice in some other countries, most patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopies (EGDs) in the U.S. receive moderate sedation to facilitate their comfort and acceptance of the procedure. However, sedation increases risks, prolongs recovery, and increases direct and indirect costs.
