Abstract
This chapter compares the legal situation of Palestinian refugees from that of other refugees, and whether any differences affect the former’s rights to a durable solution to their plight. It looks at the role of the United Nations and its subsidiary agencies, particularly the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), in addressing the problems of Palestinian refugees. The UN’s involvement in Palestine and its conflict with Israel dates back to 1945, and its obligations towards resolving the Palestinian refugee problem are founded on the Charter of the United Nations. The chapter also discusses the work of two other agencies established by the UN to provide assistance and protection to Palestine refugees: the United Nations Conciliation Commission on Palestine (UNCCP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
