Abstract

Formation of β-lactams by the reaction of acid chloride, N-cinnamylidenearylamine and a tertiary amine seems to involve multiple pathways. Microwave-induced irradiation and high temperature lead to preferential formation (95-100 %) of trans (3-lactams derived from conjugated imines.
