Abstract

Contemporary German poetry is characterized by a dynamic relationship to history, language, new media, and performance that makes it well suited for integration into culture and language courses. This article offers three interpretive approaches to working with poems and provides a concise compendium of readily accessible teaching resources. Current research on the teaching of literature is reviewed and poems by Herta Müller and Durs Grünbein are used to give examples of pedagogical treatments.
