Abstract
Considering the vector state at 4.414 GeV as the third radial excitation of a c c 3S 1 system, it is shown how the nodal structure of the decay amplitudes leads to unexpected branching fractions for the charmed meson channels. Specifically, it is predicted that this state should (practically) not decay into D ∗ D ∗ nor into F F . The same momentum dependence (which is closely connected with the composite nature of the mesons) yields also an explanation for the disturbingly small total width of the 4.414 state.
