Abstract
To what extent can Europe remain a manufacturer of combat aircraft? Among key aerospace and defence contractors attending this year's Paris Air Show on 20–26 June are several looking to unmanned aerial vehicles to help maintain key skills in the military aircraft sector during an age of reduced defence spending. With production of current European combat aircraft types likely to come to an end within the next 10-15 years, both the United Kingdom and France are working on next-generation designs. Since there are no plans for new European-made manned fighters, new designs for unmanned aircraft are particularly important.
