Abstract

Reviews the main features of the Oxford Thesaurus: an A-Z Dictionary of Synonyms; in the context of the historical development of general the saurus publishing and the main char acteristics of early published thesauri. The unique features of the Oxford Thesaurus consist of the technique of illustrating entries with sample sen tences carefully selected to clarify the precise meanings, and the inclusion of a full index of all synonyms used. The examples chosen are lively, con temporary, natural and idiomatic. While all the notorious four letter Anglo Saxon words are included, one class of word is notably absent: terms of racial abuse; all of which are included in Roget's Thesaurus. The Oxford Thesaurus is published by Oxford University Press and is avail able in printed form and on floppy diskette for use on personal comput ers.
