Abstract

A small group of species historically included in the genus Cynorta C.L. Koch, 1839 has been identified and described in this study. Based on a phylogenetic analysis using morphological data, we propose that these species be recognized as a non-monotypic genus, for which the available name Abria Sørensen, 1932 is used. Abria is newly diagnosed and its species illustrated, and its systematic position in the family Cosmetidae is evaluated by parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Our results reinforce Abria as a separate genus not related to Cynorta, suggest a relationship with some Cynortinae from the Antillas, and challenge the monophyly of the subfamily. The following nomenclatural acts are proposed: Abria Sørensen, 1932 rank nov., revalidated (originally a subgenus of Cynorta, and currently in its synonymy); Abria innominata Henriksen, 1932 (= Cynorta ornatissima González-Sponga, 1992 syn. nov.); Abria maculabnormiscomb. nov (for Cynorta maculabnormis González-Sponga, 1992). and Abria reticulatastat. rev.,comb. nov (for Cynortula reticulata Roewer, 1947) (= Cynorta montis González-Sponga, 1992 syn. nov.).
