Abstract

This article advances a hypothesis that university library book expenditures today are no greater than, and possibly smaller than, those of an earlier day, and explores in an introductory way six methodological questions involved in testing the hypothesis. The author decides on a comparative study of university libraries in Germany in 1860 and 1960 and university libraries in the United States in 1910 and 1960, presenting some tentative comparisons as a basis for a longer continuing study.
