Abstract

Describes the selection of a library computer system for the University College of the Northern Territory (UCNT) in Australia, which opened in 1987. Only four months were available in which to appoint staff, order books, take decisions on computer systems and process the first books. The choice of an in-house system was precipitated by the need to start ordering immediately. The system developed was written in Dataflex database software, based on a Novell local area network (LAN), mounted on a network of fast AT workstations, powered by an 80386 file server. Response times of the new system were very fast. It is planned to develop a serials system in 1988. Advantages and disadvantages of adopting this type of system are discussed. It offers a cheap and flexible solution to the problem of managing libraries. UCNT are offering to make the system available gratis to any library in a developing country interested in using this type of system and to offer a consultancy service if required.
