Abstract
The experimentally observed sigma /sut tot/ K/sub p/ approx equal sigma /sub tot/ pi p at hig h energies indicates that in terms of the Regge formalism of strong interactions the Pomeranchuck poie couples universally to the K and pi mesons. A more extensive treatment of the idea of universality for the Pomeranchuk pole coupling is shown to lead to the relations sigma /sub tot pp/ approx equal 2 sigma /sub tot pi p / approx equal 2 sigma /sub tot Kp/ approx equal 4 sigma /sub tot 4pi pi / approx equal 4 sigma /sub tot pi K/ approx equal 4 sitt KK/ in the high energy limit and to the independence of the diffraction pattern in high energy elastic scatiering from the particular process considered.
