Abstract
A third of developed countries do not test for maternal group B streptococcus colonisation in pregnant women and follow a strategy of identifying maternal risk factors for EOGBS disease in the baby, and offering those 'higher risk groups' intrapartum antimicrobial prophylaxis. Hasperhoven et al (BJOG, 2020) present an updated systematic review of culture-based testing for group B streptococcus (GBS) colonisation in women or risk factor-based approach for prevention of newborn early-onset GBS (EOGBS) disease. The review identified 17 observational studies, of which 15 provided data for a meta-analysis and 11 directly compared screening protocols with risk-based strategies.
