Abstract

PCR amplification and direct sequencing of mitochondrial genes of target taxa with universal primers designed according to a public DNA database can provide valuable information for phylogenetic inferences. This study describes the design of universal primer sets for an amplified partial 12S rRNA gene and fourteen other complete genes (16S rRNA gene plus 13 protein-coding genes) from the mitochondrial genome of 21 crocodilian species. This provides useful tools for the study of genetic variability in Crocodilia at or below the species level.
