Abstract

We study the lattice average of Polyakov loops in SU(2) gauge theory with zero, two and four species of light dynamical quarks. As function of the coupling β ≡ 4 g 2 , we find near the deconfinement point β c (with β > β c) in all three cases L ≅ 0.5 (β − β c) 1 3 . This suggests that fermions break the global confinement symmetry only rather weakly, so that the universality relation between Z 2 spin theory and SU(2) gauge theory is retained to a good approximation even when quarks are present.
