Abstract

We present a parallel analysis of low-temperature series for the correlation decay exponent η in the 2D XY model, and for the fine structure constant α = e R 2 4π in 4D lattice compact QED. A new anology is found between the two models: Kosterlitz's prediction gh c = 1 4 at T = T c has its counterpart in the gauge case, namely the squared renormalized charge takes the universal value 4 πα c = 1.9 ± 0.1 at the deconfining point.
