Abstract

Symmetry is the most powerful concept we have at our disposal in our attempts to understand the order of the natural world in the subatomic realm. Symmetry expresses the fact, or hope, that the laws of nature at the subatomic level are unchanged under some imagined, or perhaps actual, operation, even though this may not be apparent at higher levels. A simple example is mirror symmetry. If you look at yourself in a mirror it is clear that the person looking back at you from the mirror world is not identical to yourself; there is always some imperfection that would allow an acute observer to spot the difference.
