Abstract

The economic indicators are a set of data used in analyzing current and future economic conditions. Indicators are classified according to their timing in relation to the business cycle; that is, whether they lead, lag, or coincide with movements of the economy. The indicators are classified by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). Composite indexes are also produced by BEA. The primary published sources for the indicators and appropriate background information are Business Conditions Digest (BCD) and its supplement Handbook of Cyclical Indicators. The indicators, in particular the composite index of leading indicators, have serious conceptual limitations which must be understood in order to use these data wisely.
