Abstract

The United Kingdom is composed of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain itself is composed of three different parts: England, Wales, and Scotland. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was originally established in 1801, when Ireland formally became part of the country. (As Ireland is treated in a separate chapter, we only deal here with Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Concerning Ireland and the Irish Republic see also the chapter on Ireland). The United Kingdom therefore consists of four parts: England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland (since 1921 Northern Ireland).KeywordsNineteenth CenturyInfant MortalityNordic CountryDemographic TransitionDivorce RateThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
