Abstract

A method is presented to unitarize the hard-pion current-algebra pion-pion amplitude derived by Schnitzer. A three-parameter crossing symmetric amplitude is obtained that does not have any arbitrary function for simulating the left-hand discontinuities. Elastic unitarity is satisfied in the lowest-order correction to current algebra. Once the P-wave is given in the low-energy region, this method leads to a sharp determination of the S-wave phase shifts. Our solution favors the down type for the I = 0 S-wave phase shifts.
