Abstract

Alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) consumption expressed as Number of liters of product used is often used to monitor hand hygiene (HH) activity, usually by looking at trends in consumption over time. It has the potential as a surrogate for measuring compliance and is less labor intensive. However, it does not provide denominator data necessary to reasonably report a compliance rate. Here, we describe unit-specific HH opportunities as benchmarks to estimate compliance based on ABHR consumption.
