Abstract

The authors' new one-dimensional free coating theory is considered further, and compared with previous theories. It is shown that a unique value of the dimensionless film thickness, T 0, exists over a wide range of Capillary Number, Ca. The shape of the upper meniscus is predicted from the new one-dimensional theory and compared with previous one- and two-dimensional creeping flow solutions. The superiority of the new one-dimensional theory over the previous theory is demonstrated, and the shape of the upper meniscus is shown to provide a more sensitive test of withdrawal theories. Comparison is also made with recently presented data.
