Abstract

This study communicates an investigation on the facile combination of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheet and TiO2 as an efficient catalyst for the photoreduction of bicarbonate to produce formic acid. Ti3C2 has a distinct two-dimensional structure with a nanoscale thickness. Ti3C2 could well interact and envelop the TiO2 particles and decrease the bandgap of the composite. As a result, a bandgap of 2.9 eV, located in the visible light region, could be achieved. The catalytic tests show that Ti3C2/TiO2 composite could produce formic acid up to 7.5 mmol g.cat−1, ∼2.5 times higher than pristine TiO2.
