Abstract
In this article, the authors highlight both the unique challenges faced by and the contributions made by academic medical centers (AMCs) that serve as their state’s lone AMC through the experience of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In addition, they lay out ideas to address some of the most severe threats facing lone AMCs. Although each lone AMC will need to devise solutions to address the specific challenges it faces, based on their own experience, the authors lay out three action items: (1) operate more like a private business, (2) expand investment in governmental affairs efforts, and (3) be selective and deliberate in identifying and investing in those areas that will become nationally recognized.
