Abstract

Unusual and apparently previously undescribed subsarcolemmal aggregates of round and ovoid concentrically laminated periodic membranous inclusions associated with myofiber degeneration were observed by means of electron microscopy in skeletal muscles biopsies from three adults. No consistent clinical or laboratory findings were observed in these patients, although two had abnormal glucose tolerance with diminished insulin levels. The constellation of clinical and electron microscopic findings in these patients appeared distinct from those described in other myopathies. However, the nature, origin, significance, and specificity of these inclusion is at present uncertain. It is hoped that this polemic may be resolved by subsequent search and recording of similar structures.
