Abstract

The growth of the older adult population over the prior century raises serious concerns among health providers, economists, and policy makers in every nation. The likelihood of living with multiple chronic illnesses and disabilities rises dramatically in old age, and the rapid growth in the older adult population suggests sharp increases in healthcare expenditures. In the U.S., the contemporary cohort of people age 65+ have more than twice as many medical office visits and more than three times as many hospitalizations than people age 18 to 44.
