Abstract

Cleanup and investigation continue following an explosion and fire early last week that rocked an ethylene oxide unit at Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Co.'s Seadrift plant in Port Lavaca, Tex., about 125 miles southwest of Houston. The blast killed one person, injured at least 19, and idled the entire facility, which also produces ethylene, ethylene glycol, glycol ether, ethanolamines, and polyethylene. Carbide says all but three of those hurt by the blast appeared to have relatively minor injuries, cuts, and bruises, and were not hospitalized. Carbide has been unable to confirm a press report that six more people, who were driving outside the plant site, were injured by the blast. In addition, roughly 25 area residents were evacuated for a few hours as a safety precaution, but the company does not believe the explosion resulted in any emissions endangering the public.
