Abstract

Recent organizing attempts in the high‐tech sector have raised questions about the relevance of unions for highly skilled and highly paid information technology professionals. In fact, unions in the motion picture and television industries already represent workers who are nearly identical to high‐tech professionals. For decades, unions in these industries have commanded the loyalty of highly skilled and highly compensated professionals who work on a freelance basis by providing them with access to health insurance and retirement benefits and generally providing them with the support services to survive in their careers. If the labor movement is looking for models to organize and represent high‐tech or new media professionals, it need look no further than the motion picture and television unions.
