Abstract

For the majority of the last century, the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program has been the leading source of crime statistics in the United States. The UCR data was first collected in 1930 and is published annually in a summary report entitled Crime in the United States . The FBI oversees data collection from the overwhelming majority of federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies and has expanded the program beyond the seven initially measured crimes to also assess arson, minor offenses, cargo theft, hate crimes, and violence against law enforcement officers. Though the UCR Program fails to quantify crimes unreported to police, it serves as a valuable tool in assessing major forms of crime, changes in crime rates/types over time, and law enforcement activity.
