Abstract

In recent years there has been an ongoing enhancement of the development of steel manufacturing in continuous-casting and rolling-mill engineering as well as in the field of the downstream processing lines. The automation concept being presented, which has already been successfully implemented on several facilities, is making a crucial contribution to the fulfilment of the continually rising demands of the market with regard to product quality, the optimisation of productivity, plant availability and technology.Within the frame of their drive for the implementation of technological control systems in level 1 SMS developed an automation system that with its performance spectrum ranging from the PC to modern multi - microprocessor engineering covers all applications in the iron and steel industry. The software tools ensure systematic engineering and programming in accordance with the IEС 1131 international standard.Computer systems of renowned makers are being employed for process models in level 2. Software engineering and programming are performed here with modern techniques using casetools.A new human-machine interface (οМI) system on a PC basis is employed together for levels 1 and 2. It enables all the relevant information to be visualised as desired throughout the plant. The standardisation of the user software in the form of modules and clearly defined interfaces leads to a high degree of re-employability and thus to reduced risk and cost.
