Abstract

This paper was devised on behalf of the Women and Gender Commission of World Leisure in response to the call by UNICEF and UN women, in July 2012, for evidence to inform the “Global Thematic Consultation on Addressing Inequalities in the Post-2015 Development Agenda”. The results of the global consultation exercise are intended to form a platform on which to build sustainable global development beyond the horizon of the Millennium Development Goals. This small contribution to the global effort has been made by women researching leisure around the world. The paper confirms the power of leisure as a vehicle for the transformation of women and girls’ lives, particularly in relation to inequality and poverty in health and well-being.
