Abstract

It is well known and has been shown qualitatively and quantitatively that the necking phenomenon in uniaxial tensile ductile metal specimens is caused by the presence of non-uniformities in the initial geometry and initial strength. It is shown in this paper that a uniaxial true stress-true strain curve for an idealized perfect specimen could be constructed from experimental data which is available for uniaxial tensile tests on ductile metal specimens having a known initial non-uniformity.
