1. What are the differential diagnoses for a child with hematemesis? According to Pomeranz, Busey, Sabnis, Behrman, and Kliegma (2002) and Sylvester (2004), t differential diagnoses for hematemesis in a school-aged child are extensive and include the following: ● Peptic ulcer disease (gastritis; duodenitis; gastric and duodenal ulcers) ● Postoperative small bowel obstruction (SBO) ● Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) adverse effect ● Esophagitis ● Mallory-Weiss tear ● Foreign body ● Vascular malformation ● Caustic ingestion ● Esophageal or gastric varices (related to liver disease and portal hypertension) ● Gastric or intestinal duplications ● Tumor
