Abstract
Unfaithful (2002) is a Hollywood erotic thriller that depicts the emotional and moral dilemmas of a husband who responds jealously to his wife’s adulterous affair. The film is based on Claude Chabrol’s 1968 film La Femme Infidele (‘The Unfaithful Wife’)1 and was directed by Adrian Lyne, the director of the 1987 film Fatal Attraction. Just as Fatal Attraction pushed a number of cultural buttons in the 1980s about the dangers of marital infidelity, this film also captures a number of contemporary anxieties about the sexual politics of the family, marital fidelity and the loss of faith in the traditional model of the bourgeois nuclear family.2 As one reviewer put it: ‘Lyne [provides a] contemporary exploration of bourgeois adultery and its consequences in the Noughties’ (Norman, 2002: 55).
