Abstract

A series of solid solutions of the composition Ca8-2xPb2xBi2(PO4)6O2 (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) was synthesized using solid-state reaction. It was observed that solid solutions can't form between the last apatite phase Ca2Pb6Bi2(PO4)6O2 and non-apatite phase Pb8Bi2(PO4)6O2, therefore this system has a morphotropic transition. The proportions of the distribution of cations over the crystallographic positions of the apatite structure were established using Rietveld refinement, and thermal expansion of synthesized compounds was explained on this basis.
