Abstract

"In the fall of 1936 the State Emergency Relief Administration improved both its service to the unemployed and its efficiency of operation by establishing cash relief in the sixtyfive counties which had previously granted direct relief in the form of commodity orders." By enabling families to choose the source from which they would purchase goods and to budget their own needs, cash relief has made for economy and greater efficiency and has also made it possible to simplify the method of determining eligibility and the amount of relief to be granted. Also, it is largely responsible for a decline of 61.3 per cent in the administrative personnel, while the case load decreased 39.5 per cent. The number of persons receiving relief decreased from an average of 1,636,000 in 1935 to 1,456,000 in 1936.
