Abstract
When he wrote his Roman History, Livy made literary and political choices, with the clear intention of giving his fellow citizens exempla. Thus we can retain the memory of brilliant feats of arms by renowned men, but very few are outstanding women. Livy related at length the trial of one of them, Virginia, who became a symbol of freedom for all Romans. Who was Virginia? What truth - more or less acceptable - is hidden behind her death the Roman historian describes ?
