Abstract

A fast neutron source placed in the superficial layers of a damp soil produces at the surface a thermal flux which can be measured with boron detectors. The originality of this article lies in the experimental demonstration of the relationships existing between the flux and the volumetric moisture content for different source depths. It is also shown that the new measurement method proposed is well adapted to the heterogenous water content distribution of surface soils.
