Abstract

Rational management of the water system in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (Tarn-et-Garonne) in the Middle and Modern Ages. Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val is a monastic town located at the confluence of the Bonnette the Aveyron Rivers which boasts a remarkable network of underground and surface canals based on diversions of the Bonnette River. Originally built by the abbey, it was later widely used and expanded to meet the needs of urban life : cottage industry, driving force, waste water disposal. The use of these underground sewers was taken into account in the design of some houses as early as the XIIIth century. The length of the period of time over which the canals were in use is testimony to the skills involved in building them.
