Abstract
A polarized proton target for high energy physics is described. Designed for the strong focusing synchrotron of CERN, the target crystal is 1.2 cm wide with a 5 cm depth along the beam. Proton polarizations in excess to ±70% are obtained in lanthanum- magnesium-nitrate, in a field of 18.5 kG at a temperature of 1.1°K. The magnetic field is vertical and the horizontal cryostat is a new type continuous helium flow system, fed from commercially available 50 litre containers. The free angle around the target is 5 sterad. Proton polarization is measured in a fraction of a second by nuclear magnetic resonance; this system will be described in the second part of this paper which will appear later in this review.
