Abstract

We briefly review undulators and wigglers (u/w) as radiation sources. We restrict our attention to transverse alternating polarity devices to be used in low energy storage rings, particularly to the case of the 0.8 GeV electron storage ring BESSY in Berlin. We discuss the spectral properties of u/w radiation and some aspects of magnet technology relevant to the construction of such devices. Finally we comment on the application of novel devices offering variable polarization.
