Abstract

ABSTRACT Undrained axi-symmetrical triaxial and plane strain behaviour of a saturated remolded clay was investigated by K0 consolidated compression and extension tests. Experimental results indicate that not only undrained shear strength but also effective angle of shearing resistance were greatly influenced by the stress system as well as the deformation condition during shear. Shear induced pore pressure versus octahedral shear stress increment relationships in plane strain compression and extension tests were substantially identical with those in axi-symmetrical compression and extension tests, respectively. A tentative method for evaluating the magnitude of intermediate principal stress during shear was proposed and comparison between predicted and observed stress-strain behaviour under plane strain condition was also presented.
