Abstract

Researchers for the Acoustic Thermometry Ocean Climate (ATOC) program are meeting negative public reaction to their plan to install powerful underwater loudspeakers at two sites in Hawaii and California, one of which is within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. If the project is approved, the loudspeakers, which are about the size of cylindrical water heaters, will emit acoustic signals to receivers in other parts of the ocean. The ATOC researchers will compute the signals' travel times to accurately measure internal ocean temperatures.
