Abstract

The pump jet is a very effective propulsion device for high-speed surface craft such as hydrofoils and surface effect vehicles. However, noise from the jet may interfere with sonar performance. Model studies of a water jet have been made to determine the physical mechanisms of the noise generation process and the characteristics of the noise. Parametric studies of the effect of nozzle diameter, exit velocity, angle of inclination, and upstream turbulence were made. The noise appears to have at least three distinct mechanisms which scale differently. Bubble entrainment and impact of the jet core on the water surface appear to play the predominant generation roles. A high-speed motion picture illustrates the postulated mechanism.
