Abstract
For women childbirth can be traumatic. For midwives, the working environment and fulfilling their role can be stressful and sometimes traumatic. How we, as midwives, relate to the women we care for, has been shown to be an important aspect of birth trauma and the subsequent development of post traumatic stress disorder. Set against the background of perinatal mental health and recent national maternity reviews, I am exploring the needs not only of women, but also importantly of midwives as they relate to one another during the provision of maternity care. Rather than increase the burden of expectation on midwives, I hope to inform education and support for midwives
