Abstract
We argue that each quark flavour has its own Higgs doublet and that all the Yukawa couplings are practically identical at the GUT scale. The observed hierarchy of quark and lepton masses comes from a hierarchy of vacuum expectation values which arises naturally in the context of radiative SU(2) ×U(1) breaking induced by N = 1 supergravity.
